Evidence 1. Influence of Father - Sisters are constantly terrorized by their dead father. -"But how could she explain to constantia that their father was in the chest of drawers?" - Death of father leaves them in a helpless state, unable to make decisions -"Should they dye their dressing-gowns black in mourning?" -Fried or baked fish 2. Individuality - Cyril is a much more strong character than the "dreamy" sisters. - Unconcerned with petty details such as whether father likes meringues. -"What an extraordinary thing to come all this way to tell me" - Cyril has "escaped" father's control, he no longer cares whether "father's terribly fond of meringues." 3. Repression - Sisters are repressed in the sense that they have no chance to make their own decisions based on what they want. As such, they have nearly forgotten what they want. - Fish incident. - Unable to sack Nurse Andrews. - Kate. - Sisters also do not know how to deal with people due to their lack of social contact. -Unable to tell Nurse Andrews that she is taking advantage of them. -Have no contact with any male. - Self-repression. The sisters finally realise to a certain extent that father is gone, and that they will finally actually have to make decisions themselves. However, the prospect of such freedom to do whatever they want scares them, and thus they "forget" to tell each other to plan for the future, to stay in their state, going nowhere. - Can be seen in the last part. The ray of light from the sun signifies a new begining, but their fear of the future, the fear of finally making decisions for themselves paralyses them, and thus clouds the sun.
